Rock Creek Project B is part of DC Water’s Clean Rivers Green Infrastructure Projects. It is the second GI project constructed in the Rock Creek Sewershed. The first green infrastructure project, Rock Creek Project A, was completed in 2018 in the Brightwood Park and Manor Park neighborhoods. DC Water’s Clean Rivers Projects will significantly reduce the level of pollution to the District’s waterways produced by the discharge of stormwater runoff and sanitary sewer flows, known as combined sewer overflows (CSOs).
Rock Creek Project B includes the construction of alley permeable pavement and bioretention sites. These practices manage stormwater by taking advantage of the earth’s natural processes, such as allowing the water to infiltrate into the soil, evaporate into the air or be used by plants which transpire it as vapor. In addition to managing stormwater, GI contributes to beautifying the streetscape and making it more welcoming for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers.
L. S. Caldwell & Associates, Inc. (LSC) had responsibility for the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Fair Share Objective initiatives for the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority’s (DC Water) Clean Rivers Project. This $2.6 billion program was the result of a Consent Decree signed by the District of Columbia, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice. DC Water was required to clean up the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers by 2025.
