The Tunnel Dewatering Pump Station is the final installation of the enhanced nitrogen removal program. It is a complex pumping facility that will be built into the shaft that currently serves as an entrance to the DC Water tunneling process. It will be the equivalent of a 10-story building, built downwards underground for the purpose of lifting tons of combined sewage that will be conveyed in the tunnels after rainwater up to surface level for treatment. It is a design-build joint venture of PC Construction and CDM Smith, which is estimated at nearly $215 million dollars. The contract also includes an enhanced clarification facility to treat up to 225 million gallons per day of excess flow during rainstorm events. The flow can then either be sent to secondary treatment or discharged into the Potomac River.
